Nothing To Do With Childbirth

labor day-rosie

Labor day.  Or, if you are Canadian, Labour day.  Sounds tiring, but in actuality it is one of the few holidays that doesn’t require you to do much.

The form that Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public "the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations" of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families.

Ah, something we can get into!  Its beginning, however, was not so smooth.

Originally celebrated near the first of May, to coincide with European traditions, it went awry in Chicago in 1886, when protestors for a standard 8 hour work day clashed with police, resulting in about a dozen deaths in what is known as the "Haymarket Massacre".

As a result, President Grover Cleveland, fearing that celebrating Labor Day on May 1 could foment some serious commemorative violence, designated the official holiday as the first Monday in September.

The equivalent holiday in Canada is also celebrated the first Monday of September, while in more than 80 countries worldwide, Labor Day is synonymous with International Worker's Day, celebrated on May 1st.

So, sit back and relax- this one is for you!!!

A Remarkable Reunion !

Jim Rogers, Chairman of Salon Schools Group, with Michael Puccetti (left) and Raphael Velasquez, two graduates who have distinguished themselves as top salon artists, share a moment at the Schools's recent Reunion.

Graduates from as far back as the sixties, commemorating 79 years of beauty and barber education- with some from far, far away, gathered to share memories and stories to the background of a wonderful harpist and the burbling fountain of the famed Loralei.

We have listened carefully to those many participants who told us we shouldn't wait so long for the next one, so keep watch!

Meanwhile, this is an "all points bulletin" to ANY GRADUATES who have stories, articles, photos, ads, etc. that we could post for alumni to see.  Email me at:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  with any contributions.
